SCHENECTADY – The Galesi Group held a groundbreaking celebration today to commemorate the start of construction on Harbor Center, a nearly 100,000 square foot office and retail complex at Schenectady’s Mohawk Harbor. The ceremony was held at the Harbor Center site, which is part of the $480 million Mohawk Harbor mixed-use development.

Today’s ceremony brought together Galesi Group representatives, as well as city, county, and state officials, members of the Capital Region business community and Schenectady residents, to celebrate the most recent milestone for one of the most anticipated developments in the Capital Region.

Mohawk Harbor is a $480 million, 1.4 million-square-foot planned community that integrates luxury living, high-tech office space, hotels, restaurants and retail along one mile of the Mohawk River.

Located at the entrance of Mohawk Harbor, Harbor Center is a $27 million office and retail complex comprised of two buildings. One Harbor Center is a 39,000-square-foot building with 13,000 square feet of retail space and 26,000 square feet of office space. Two Harbor Center is a 65,845 square foot building with 21,820 square feet of retail space with 44,025 square feet of office space. The complex shares underground parking for 288 cars and 226 surface parking spaces. Harbor Center is expected to be completed by the end of 2017.

Construction of Harbor Center is occurring in tandem with The Riverhouse, a 206-unit apartment building with approximately 47,000 square feet of retail along the promenade overlooking Mohawk Harbor. Adjacent to Harbor Center is the soon-to-open 124-room Courtyard Marriott Schenectady Hotel. Harbor Center is also located near the $330 million Rivers Casino & Resort, currently slated for an early 2017 opening.

“Schenectady is yet another example of Upstate New York’s revival under this Governor, and there are few better testaments to this than the Mohawk Harbor project,” said Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul. “The Harbor Center will complement the new casino, hotel and apartments, opening the door for new businesses and jobs and will be a place where people can live, work and play.”

“Construction at Mohawk Harbor is in full swing, and today’s groundbreaking marks a significant step forward in this tremendous undertaking,” said Dave Buicko, Chief Executive Officer of Galesi Group. “Mohawk Harbor is a one-of-a-kind landmark on the historic Erie Canal, and a premier place to live, work and play. And Harbor Center is the latest initiative to bring jobs into Schenectady, a goal Galesi Group has been working towards for years with aggressive, quality commercial development downtown and elsewhere.”

“Mohawk Harbor was once home to the American Locomotive Company, which brought prosperity to Schenectady for years. With this massive private investment underway, we are excited about Schenectady’s future,” said Schenectady Mayor Gary McCarthy. “I applaud Galesi Group for its continued investment in the City of Schenectady, and look forward to seeing even more jobs come to Schenectady at Harbor Center.”

“Congratulations to the Galesi Group for taking another step forward in the complete transformation of a long vacant brownfield and eyesore into the new Mohawk Harbor,” said Anthony Jasenski, Chairman of the Schenectady County Legislature. “We cannot thank them enough for their commitment and investment in Schenectady County.”
