More Improvements Underway at Glenville Business and Technology Park

Schenectady, N.Y., October 9, 2015 – The Schenectady County Metroplex Development Authority today announced two projects at the Glenville Business and Technology Park.

Rail service to the park will be improved under a $140,000 contract awarded to Riegel Rail Solutions of Selkirk, NY. The $140,000 contract will improve rail shipments to the park by upgrading the rail line and making repairs to the track. The rail spur servicing the business park is owned by the Schenectady County Industrial Development Agency (IDA). The spur connects with Pan Am Railways to provide rail shipping service to companies at the business park. The $140,000 cost will be shared by the IDA ($45,000), Metroplex ($25,000), Dimension Fabricators ($35,000), and Adirondack Beverages ($35,000).  Both Dimension and Adirondack are major users of the rail service. The Schenectady County IDA is administered by Metroplex as part of Schenectady County’s unified economic development team.

Gary Hughes, County IDA Chairman and a member of the Schenectady County Legislature said, “We appreciate the support of both Dimension Fabricators and Adirondack Beverages for improving rail service.  We are pleased to partner with these two growing manufacturing companies to improve rail service to Glenville Business and Technology Park.”

Adirondack Beverages employs almost 300 in Glenville bottling water, soda and other beverages. Dimension Fabricators employs 90 people in Glenville. The company provides steel products used in major infrastructure projects around the United States and Canada. Both companies continue to grow and add employees.

Another improvement to the business park is taking place along Route 5. The Glenville Business and Technology Park is located where Route 5 meets Exit 26 of the NYS Thruway offering direct highway access to companies located in the park.  The Galesi Group recently purchased a 7.5 acre site on Route 5 that contains an old Navy recruiting command office that dates back to the site’s use as the Scotia Naval Depot. This week, the Galesi Group has started demolition of the building.

“The former Navy building was an eyesore and we appreciate the work of the Galesi Group to remove this blighted structure to create a new development site at the gateway to the business park,” said Ray Gillen, Metroplex Chair.

National Grid is providing an economic development grant of $83,796 to help fund the demolition project in Glenville as part of its program to create shovel-ready development sites in Upstate New York. The Galesi Group is investing more than $500,000 to prepare the site for development.

William Flaherty, Director, Customer and Community Manager, said, “We are pleased to provide funding that helps break down barriers for redevelopment and return this site to productive use, thus creating an opportunity for job creation and capital investment at a prime location in Schenectady County.”

The Galesi Group hired Jackson Demolition of Schenectady to do the work which is now underway.

The Glenville Business and Technology Park is home to more than 3.9 million square feet of space on 310 acres making it one of the largest business parks in the Capital Region.  The Glenville site is home to Adirondack Beverages, Dimension Fabricators, Old Dominion, CTDI, DHA Energy, Latham Plastics, Norampac, Codino’s, Specialty Quality Packaging, Thyssen Krupp Safeway, Capovani Brothers, W.A. Packaging, Velocity Print Solutions, Chick Packaging/NEFAB and others.
