2010 Census Shows Continued Growth in Schenectady County

March 24, 2011

(Schenectady, NY) –While the population of many regions in New York State shrinks, Schenectady County continues to buck the trend.  According to the 2010 U.S. Census, Schenectady County is the second fastest growing county in the Capital District and ninth fastest growing in New York State.  The County has grown from 146,555 residents in 2000 to 154,727 residents in 2010, an increase of 5.58% reaching a forty year high since the population peaked in 1970.  This comes on top of Bureau of Labor Statistics figures that showed Schenectady County has the highest average weekly wage in the Capital District.

“Creating and maintaining job opportunities throughout Schenectady County has been a top priority of the County Legislature for the past six years,” said Susan E. Savage, Chairwoman of the Schenectady County Legislature.  “Our hard work has paid off as more people have found out what a great place Schenectady County is to live, work, and raise a family.”

In the past six years, Schenectady County’s unified economic development team has attracted more than $400 million in new investments creating more than 3,500 new jobs.  Given the trend and the continued success of the County’s economic development effort, Savage is confident the growth will continue.

“Through smart, strategic planning and new ideas, we will continue the dramatic turnaround of Schenectady County that we started six years ago,” continued Chair Savage.
