Metroplex to Purchase and Demolish Nott Terrace Eyesore

Schenectady, N.Y., June 20, 2016 — The Schenectady County Metroplex Development Authority today announced plans to purchase and then demolish a building at 219 Nott Terrace, a major gateway to downtown Schenectady. The building is in extremely poor condition and it detracts from new investment in the Nott Terrace corridor.

Ray Gillen, Metroplex Chair said, “This building is taking away from the progress we have made on Nott Terrace and in downtown. It needs to come down, and we are pleased to announce that we have reached an agreement with the owner to buy the building and demolish it.”

The 3,200 square foot building at 219 Nott Terrace is blighted and a beam at the front of the building has separated from the structure.

The Metroplex Board will act on the building at its meeting Wednesday night. The board will consider a resolution to purchase the building for $7,500 and then immediately seek bids to remove the asbestos and demolish the structure. If interim measures are needed to stabilize the loose beam on top of the structure, Metroplex will take action to do so immediately.

Nott Terrace is a busy gateway to downtown that has seen considerable new investment including the new $15 million DoubleTree by Hilton, Clarkson’s graduate school, more programming and visitors at MiSci, and efforts to improve Vale Park. The building at 219 Nott Terrace is also close to MVP’s corporate headquarters.

Metroplex and the City of Schenectady are working together to clean up several other buildings on Nott Terrace including the former Castelo’s restaurant.
