One of America’s Premier Two-Year College Music Programs Teams With Top Four-Year Programs in Seamless Transfer Agreements

SCCC's School of Music Builds Momentum With New $3.9M Building

November 6, 2014

Schenectady County Community College’s renowned School of Music – one of only a handful of nationally accredited two-year programs and a catalyst for magnificent performances throughout the Capital Region – recently made it a lot easier for its graduates to transfer to top four-year programs with new articulation agreements. These allow for seamless transfer of credits from SCCC into the four-year programs so that students enter with full junior status.

New articulation agreements have been signed with the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam, SUNY Buffalo State College, SUNY Oneonta, Hartwick College and the College of Saint Rose. The agreements include transfer paths in music education, performance, and music industry programs. The School of Music also has articulation agreements with SUNY Fredonia in music education and performance and with Nazareth College in the field of music therapy.

“Our incredible School of Music continues to be recognized for its excellence in producing not only brilliant musicians but also musicians who are academically accomplished, with skills and knowledge that are transferrable to prestigious four-year programs,” said Dr. Martha Asselin, Acting President of SCCC.  “The College takes much pride in these articulation agreements, and we are happy to provide our students with new, well-deserved opportunities.”

“These new transfer agreements give SCCC music students a wonderful array of choices to continue their education at many of New York’s finest music schools,” said Dr. William Meckley, Dean of the School of Music. “We are proud to know that these distinguished schools put their trust in us for musical training of the highest order.”

The School of Music has a stringent audition process for its performance students and has been recognized as an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music. The School hosts a variety of concerts throughout the year for loyal audiences and also features the Empire Jazz Orchestra, Capital Region Wind Ensemble and the Musicians of Ma’alwyck chamber ensemble, along with guest artists-in-residence and performers annually. Graduates of SCCC’s music programs have transferred to many of the finest music schools and conservatories in the United States.

In Fall 2012, working with SCCC’s County sponsor, the program was able to move into a new building worthy of the its stellar reputation. The $3.9 million, 12,600-square-foot state-of-the-art space allows students to study to become performers, educators and music industry professionals.

“Schenectady County is proud to support our Community College, especially our highly respected music program,” said Anthony Jasenski, Chairman of the Schenectady County Legislature.  “Whether it’s through our support for the expansion of the new Music Building or through this fantastic transfer agreement, we continue to show how through cooperation and strong leadership our community college will continue to grow and benefit all of our students and the entire Schenectady County community.”

The School of Music will soon be accepting applications for the Spring 2015 semester. Students should call 381-1231, extension 2, to schedule an audition/advisement. For general SCCC Admissions inquiries, please visit www.sunysccc.edu or call 381-1366.

Overall, SCCC has articulation agreements with more than 50 colleges and universities, making it possible for SCCC students to transfer to four-year colleges with junior status in a wide variety of disciplines.
