First Parcel Headed to Auction Block

April 29, 2008

Schenectady, N.Y., April 29, 2008 — Schenectady County officials today welcomed the news that the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) will put a 7.5 acre parcel in the Town of Glenville, formerly part of the Scotia Navy Depot, up for auction marking the beginning of a process that County and Town officials hope will eventually transfer over 70 acres to the private sector putting the property back on the tax rolls.

Susan E. Savage, Chair of the Schenectady County Legislature said, “Transfer of this land near Exit 26 and in the heart of the Scotia Glenville Industrial Park is something that the County’s economic development team has worked on for almost four years. We appreciate the tremendous support provided by Congressman McNulty and the cooperation of GSA’s regional office in Boston. This property transfer is important to our economic development effort and the return of this property to the tax rolls is good news for County taxpayers.”

The seven acre parcel is located at 1 Amsterdam Road (Route 5) in Glenville. It contains a vacant Navy office that has approximately 40,000 square feet of space. The property will be auctioned by GSA. More information may be found at www.propertydisposal.gsa.gov. The Glenville property is listed among a series of properties nationwide that are up for sale by the federal government.

The County’s economic development team is also in discussions with GSA on a larger parcel of approximately 60 acres located adjacent to the former Navy site. The goal is to develop both parcels as part of the Scotia Glenville Park putting the properties back on the tax rolls and creating shovel ready sites for businesses in the park. The Glenville Business Park is located in an Empire Zone. The site offers rail service and direct access to the Exit 26 bridge.

The County Industrial Development Agency which is administered by Metroplex recently utilized funding from Empire State Development’s Build Now New York Program to complete a master plan for the Business Park.

Frank X. Quinn, Supervisor of the Town of Glenville said, “We have been working closely with the County’s economic development team to get this transfer started so that we can increase our tax base. This is a very important step in the right direction.”

Ray Gillen, Commissioner of Economic Development and Planning in Schenectady County and Chair of Metroplex said, “The Glenville site has excellent assets for fast growing businesses. With the cooperation of GSA, our goal is to transform surplus federal property into shovel ready sites for businesses that will create new jobs and tax base for our community.”
