Groundbreaking Held for Niskayuna ‘Neighborhood Market’

Smaller Store Format Will Focus on Groceries; Employ up to 90 Associates. First of its kind in upstate New York

April 22, 2013

NISKAYUNA,  N.Y. – Walmart representatives, the town of Niskayuna, and Schenectady County officials today broke ground on the first  Walmart “Neighborhood Market” in upstate New York.

The new Neighborhood Market store – a smaller footprint option for communities in need of a pharmacy, affordable groceries and merchandise – will be located at 3421 State Street. Construction work will begin immediately and is expected to be completed in late September, with a tentative opening scheduled for October.

“We are excited about getting this project under way,” said Bill Wertz, a Walmart spokesperson. “Our Neighborhood Markets offer both convenience and affordable prices on groceries and other merchandise. They have proven to be very popular with our customers. We’re also pleased to be generating jobs and economic growth in these difficult times.”

The 40,000-sq.ft. Neighborhood Market will be about one-quarter the size of a traditional Walmart Supercenter and will employ up to 90 people.  The first Walmart Neighborhood Market opened in 1998, the company now operates about 200 markets nationally, offering services and items including: fresh produce; meat and dairy products; frozen foods; dry goods and staples; health and beauty aids; stationery and paper goods; pharmacy; deli and bakery items; and pet supplies.

The Neighborhood Market will be the anchor of the new Mansion Square complex developed by Highbridge Development, LLC, which includes both retail and restaurant outlets.

“We are very pleased to have the first WalMart “Neighborhood Market” in upstate New York open in the Town of Niskayuna,” stated Niskayuna Town Supervisor Joe Landry.  “This new addition to the Mansion Square shopping complex will offer residents of Niskayuna and surrounding communities a smaller grocery store designed for their shopping convenience.  I would like to thank the representatives of WalMart and Highbridge Development for choosing our neighborhood for this retail opportunity, and I look forward to its grand opening,” continued Supervisor Landry.

“The addition of Walmart’s first Neighborhood Market in upstate New York continues the successful lease-up of Mansion Square which is now more than 90% occupied,” said John Roth President of Highbridge Development. “We expect to announce additional tenants shortly.”

“We are proud to once again be partnering with Walmart for the construction of their first Neighborhood Market in upstate New York State,” stated Jim Dawsey, President of MLB Construction Services. “Walmart is making long-term commitments to the area, which demonstrates confidence in the direction of the overall region. MLB is thrilled to be a part of this project.”
