Marcella’s Appliance Center to Renovate Crane Street Store in Schenectady

September 25, 2020

Schenectady, N.Y. — The Schenectady County Metroplex Development Authority today joined with Better Community Neighborhoods Inc. (BCNI) to announce that Marcella’s Appliance Center will renovate the company’s store located at 810 Crane Street in Schenectady’s Mont Pleasant neighborhood.

Marcella’s is a leading appliance dealer with retail locations at 560 Broadway in Downtown Schenectady and Clifton Park.  The Crane Street location is a clearance center for Marcella’s, offering discount pricing on hundreds of name brand appliances.

“John Marcella and his team have always delivered a quality product at great prices. We are very excited about this plan to improve the building at 810 Crane Street that serves as an outlet center for the company’s extensive line of appliances,” said Mayor Gary McCarthy.

John Marcella said, “Marcella’s is happy to be a part of the revitalization project with the Mont Pleasant Merchants and we look forward to working with Metroplex and Better Community Neighborhoods on this project.”

Over $250,000 will be invested to renovate 810 Crane Street.  The project architect is SRG based in Schenectady.  The renovation work includes a new glass storefront, windows, roof, signage and landscaping. The goal is to dramatically improve the appearance of the building which is at the entrance to the Crane Street business district.

This will be the third façade project on Crane Street improving the appearance of multiple buildings in this area. Buildings at 944 and 822 Crane Street already have renovations underway.

Jennica Huff, Chief Executive Officer of BCNI said, “BCNI is thrilled to partner on another project in Schenectady that will further improve our neighborhoods.”

Metroplex has approved a $50,000 façade grant for the Marcella’s project.

Ray Gillen, Metroplex Chair said, “Improving building facades is a core mission at Metroplex. We are very pleased to work with BCNI and John Marcella to move this major renovation project forward.”

The façade improvement project administered by BCNI is part of an effort to improve the Mont Pleasant neighborhood. Other recent investments include construction of a new County Library branch on Crane Street and recent upgrades by Trustco Bank to their Crane Street branch. Over 40 blighted buildings in Mont Pleasant have been demolished by the Capital Region Land Bank and the City of Schenectady.  A new $13 million Boys and Girl Club opened in Mont Pleasant last year.   The Mont Pleasant Merchants Association is also working to make the area a better place to shop, enjoy and do business.
