(Schenectady County, NY) Members of the Schenectady County Legislature and Schenectady County Clerk John Woodward today formally opened the new Schenectady County Department of Motor Vehicles located at 2025 State Street in Schenectady. The DMV location is a newly renovated former IHOP that had been vacant since 2014.
“On average about 1,000 people pass through our doors daily completing approximately 100,000 transactions,” said County Clerk Woodward. “The new location is allowing us to modernize our DMV and be more attentive to our customer’s needs, including the ability to add kiosk services and new stations for driver’s licenses and learner’s permits.”
The former DMV location in Downtown Schenectady will be sold to Antonio Civitella, founder of the New York BizLab and CEO of Transfinder, for an expansion of the BizLab business accelerator located at 251 State Street in downtown Schenectady.
“Not only will this new facility improve customer service at the DMV and fill an empty building on State Street, but will allow the BizLab to use the County’s old DMV building to further expand and recruit new businesses into our rejuvenated downtown,” said Anthony Jasenski, Chair of the Schenectady County Legislature.
The new location is an improvement over the former building that had limited parking and a small visitor waiting area. The old location also had no elevator access to the second floor that limited use of that space. The new location has a much larger waiting are which will dramatically improve customer traffic flow and has sixty customer parking spaces. It is conveniently located near the Rt. 7/Crosstown and I-890.
“The relocation of the DMV office will benefit all of our residents by improving their experience when renewing their license or registering a vehicle, but will also act as a catalyst for additional improvements on Upper State Street and development in our thriving Downtown,” said Majority Leader Gary Hughes, Chair of the Committee on Economic Development and Planning.
The County is using proceeds from the sale of the former site and annual savings of almost $30,000 per year that was paid to lease parking toward the purchase the former IHOP. The County also hopes to increase revenue it receives from DMV transactions by moving to the new more accessible location.
The New York BizLab was founded in 2013. The facility currently houses six businesses in a large renovated former bank building. As the BizLab is nearing full occupancy Mr. Civitella approached the County to purchase the DMV building at 267 State Street to create more room for early stage tech companies that receive support services and share experiences together at the facility.
