Statement by Ray Gillen, Chair of the Schenectady County Metroplex Development Authority on NYS Comptrollers Report on Casino Revenues

August 4, 2023

“Rivers Casino & Resort has created new jobs and generated increased revenue for both the city and county. It has also greatly boosted tourism and visitation to our community.  The State Comptroller’s report shows that during 2022 the City of Schenectady and Schenectady County received the 4th and 5th largest casino payments in New York State.  The report also points out the strong recovery in revenues that has occurred post-Covid.  We would have welcomed a reference in the report to property and sales tax revenues. Rivers is the only casino in NYS that pays 100% property tax netting an additional $4 million each year for the city, county and city school district.  In addition, there is no mention of the sizeable increase and record sales tax and hotel occupancy tax revenue that Schenectady County has experienced with the impact of almost two million visitors each year coming to our waterfront casino.  Finally, we are also realizing revenues from the almost 1,000 new, good-paying jobs at the casino and additional revenues from the more than $300 million in development that has occurred at Mohawk Harbor and near the casino with more development in the pipeline.  We are very proud of the team at Rivers and all that they do for Schenectady including last weekend’s successful Harbor Jam which attracted 5,000 people to our revitalized waterfront.”
