SMRT Architects/Engineers to Move New York Office to Downtown Schenectady

January 28, 2020

Schenectady, N.Y — The Schenectady County Metroplex Development Authority today announced that SMRT will relocate the company’s New York office to the Center City Building located at 433 State Street in downtown Schenectady.

SMRT is a full-service architecture and engineering firm with offices in Portland and Bangor, Maine; Andover, Massachusetts; and New York State. SMRT has designed several significant local projects for GE Healthcare, Saratoga Hospital, Ellis Hospital, Excelsior College and numerous State and County agencies, including the new Greene County Jail.

Ellen Belknap, AIA, president of SMRT Architects and Engineers, said, “As design professionals, we recognize the momentum Schenectady is generating in its downtown, and we’re excited to be part of the community’s future as we grow our presence in the Northeast. Schenectady’s location will serve as a strategic base for our work in healthcare, science and technology, education, government and corporate environments, including sustainability, historic preservation and adaptive reuse.  SMRT has been privileged to develop corporate offices for companies such as L.L. Bean, WEX, and Hannaford.  We’re looking forward to providing our New York team with an inspiring place to come to work each day.”

Ray Gillen, Metroplex Chair said, “We’re excited to welcome SMRT’s New York office to downtown Schenectady.  After looking at many different options, we are very pleased that the company selected Schenectady County.  This shows that Schenectady is winning again by competing for and winning new jobs and investment by growing companies.”

SMRT will occupy more than 5,000 square feet of space on the fifth floor at 433 State Street, bringing 15 employees to the new office, with plans to grow.

Center City is a 200,000 square foot, $30 million mixed-use building with numerous tenants including the Schenectady YMCA, CVS Pharmacy, SUNY Schenectady, NBT Bank, AAA Northway’s corporate headquarters, M/E Engineering, Urban CO-WORKS, Johnny’s Restaurant, and the Cocobar.

David Buicko, CEO of the Galesi Group developers and owners of Center City said, “SMRT has a solid reputation and skilled employees who want to work in a creative place that offers everything from restaurants to coffee spots to gyms within a block. We are very pleased that Center City was selected over other office locations that the company considered.”

John Tobin, AIA, director of the New York office, adds, “SMRT is really thrilled to be in downtown Schenectady. We’re looking forward to the spring of 2020 when we join this vibrant community of established commercial businesses, colleges and world-class arts and culture. At Center City the SMRT team will be in the heart of it all.”

Michael Goard, AIA, NCARB, of SMRT was instrumental in establishing the new office space. Michael’s portfolio in the region includes multiple projects at GE in Schenectady, the Palace Theatre, GlobalFoundries, the Red Lion Inn and the FDR Presidential Library.
