Nine Blighted Buildings to Come Down

November 18, 2014

Schenectady, N.Y., Mayor Gary McCarthy today announced that nine more blighted buildings in Schenectady will be demolished. Mayor McCarthy said, “We have put together $7 million in State grants, federal loans, local assistanceand private resources to help rebuild our neighborhoods. Today, I am pleased to say that we are moving forward with the demolition of nine more buildings.”

The nine buildings slated for demolition include six properties to be paid for using HUD funding received by the City. HUD is working with Schenectady on an innovative program to use HUD 108 Loan Funds for demolition and community revitalization. Sales tax funding from Schenectady County will be used to pay back the HUD loan. The following six buildings, all owned by the City, will be demolished: 2934 Albany Street; 1150 Cutler Street; 206 Division Street; 12 Grove Place; 107 Henry Street, and 1055 Pleasant Street.

The City has issued a bid to demolish all six units with bids due on November 26. Work is scheduled to begin in late December following final approval of the demolition contract. Meanwhile, Schenectady’s Land Bank, with funding from the Schenectady County Metroplex Development Authority and the City of Schenectady IDA, will continue the Eastern Avenue Revitalization project that began this summer and expects three additional properties to be demolished by year end. The three buildings to be demolished are: 2 Nott Terrace Heights; 858 Eastern Avenue, and 730 Eastern Avenue.

Two Nott Terrace Heights and 858 Eastern Avenue will be demolished using City IDA funds. The owner of 730 Eastern Avenue will demolish the building. Building demolitions and renovation work will continue in 2015 as part of Mayor McCarthy’s HOMES Program designed to increase home ownership and boost Schenectady neighborhoods.
